What is SEO for blog writing?

In simple terms, SEO is how search engines like Google determine your credibility, authority, and ranking.

SEO is important for every inch of websites, but blog writing for SEO is just as crucial because:

Each article you write has an opportunity to rank #1 on Google.

Which -> increases views and makes more sales.

For businesses, it’s important to understand SEO as a whole…

But freelancer content writers and copywriters really only need to understand the basics!

And it’s a lot easier than you think.

The basics to working SEO magic as a freelancer are all in the…

• Keywords
• Formatting
• Market research 

Let’s talk about keywords for a second…

Keywords

These words are commonly searched on Google and answer questions that your audience is asking.

Your blog should contain 1 primary keyword phrase.

This keyword should be included throughout the blog article in the:

• Title
• Headings
• Body copy
• FAQ

But be sure not to ‘stuff’ keywords, though. (Meaning, don’t add your keyword just to add your keyword. Use it when it makes sense, and only then.)

If your client doesn’t have a list of keywords that they want to use…

You can use these keyword tools to help you find the strongest ones to use:

• Ubersuggest (free)

• Keysearch (paid)

• Ahrefs (paid + trial)

Formatting

When it comes to formatting for SEO, you must know this:

If it isn’t skimmable, it’s skimping!

Google needs to be able to skim your article to pick out the important content and see if you answer the common questions. 

But it’s not just Google…

Your audience will want to skim through the page to find the most important pieces of information.

They probably didn’t come to read every single word that you wrote; they want their answer and to get out.

Here are some of my top content writing formatting tips:

• Headings should show the beginning, middle, and end of your piece.

• Bullet points, numbers, or emojis are great ways to make content skimmable and separate ideas.

• To optimize for mobile, don’t have big chunks of text! (Space every 1-2 lines max.)

• Place links throughout the text in a way that looks natural.

Clear and concise formatting helps Google and your readers easily find the information that they came for. 

Remember: if you confuse your reader, you will lose your reader.

Market Research

Researching your client’s target audience is a crucial step in SEO.

Why? -> Because you need to know these things if you want to write a rankable article:

• What the audience is asking about the topic.

• What are the top-ranked posts on Google currently? (They’re obviously doing something right.)

• What can you add to your post to make it a little bit better than the others?

Doing good market research will help you speak like your audience and connect with them deeper than if you tried to speak in your own words.

You need to take time to learn about your audience (and you should charge for this time, as well!)

Because you can’t provide what’s missing if you don’t read what people are already giving.
